Abstract

This research addresses the use of the expression “Son of Man” in the vision of St. Stephen. The humanity of Christ, acquired by incarnation, is preserved even after His resurrection and ascension to heaven. The exegetical approach of the expression “Son of Man” emphasizes the use of this expression about Christ in the Old Testament only as a prophetical expression, but slightly different from the more common reference to humans. In the text of the New Testament, the use of the expression “Son of Man” refers more to Christ. The expression “son of man”, both about different people and about Christ, emphasizes the connection between Christ and people. His incarnation has a soteriological and pedagogical role at the same time, being an encouragement for St. Stephen. There is a difference between the incarnate Christ and men, especially concerning sin. People have been affected by sin, but Christ lived without sin, this study emphasizing this aspect and the connection with the phrase “Son of Man”. In practice, Christ embraces mankind in Himself so that He can redeem it, becoming the model and, at the same time, the “source of eternal salvation” (Hebrews 5: 9). His ascension at the right hand of the Father shows the efficacy of salvation through the Cross and, at the same time, is an invitation to glory, on the way of the cross.
